RKIDs Events
The Performance Group made it's annual appearance at the Southern Maryland Celtic Festival. Chuck and Maureen led Kate, Pat, Evelyn, Marie, Sonja, Linda, Sharon C, Chris, Madelyn, Bobbie, Tom, Emmett, Sandy, Evan and Bill in a 30 minute show. This year, we were accompanied by Danny Flynn and the Pond Scum band, and had choreographed dance entrances and exits. Despite the unusual heat and humidity, we had a great show and enthusiastic audience participation.
Social Group
Once again the Woodside Deli saw the likes of a party as eight RKIDS gathered for food and talk: Larisa, Roger, Michelle, Mary Ann, Maura, Madelyn, Kathryn, and Judy. The hot topics of the day included future travel plans and recent cruises. Larisa and Michelle have signed up for an Irish dance cruise in 2018; Madelyn and Bill are going to Spain; Roger made plans for an extensive month-long trip to San Francisco and Alaska (including an excursion to Denali by train); Mary Ann has booked herself a room at her beach house for the summer; Kathryn will be attending various lectures and theater programs for six weeks at Chautauqua (where Christine and Marilyn O will join her for a week in August), Stratford, and Gotteridge. Kathryn also put a deposit on a Scotland trip with Mick Moloney in 2018. So everyone is busy! Thanks to Judy for this on-the-scene report.
Irish Activities
The Emerald Isle Club's May ceili included a grand farewell to Marilyn Moore, their stalwart caller for many years. It began with a waltz with Marilyn and the EIC's president, Rick Herbig, who gave way to others seeking to dance with her and express their thanks for her years of service. Jody Landers joined Rick in speaking with warm accolades to Marilyn, then presented her with gifts. Attending RKIDs were Tom, Sonja, Jean and Joe Wds, Madelyn and Bill.
About Town
The recent explosion of spring flowers has enticed some RKIDs into action, despite the threat of allergies. Marilyn Moore, who loves to walk as well as dance, hiked a section of the C&O Canal and took this lovely photo ...
... while Kathryn filed this photo from her visit to Brighton Dam.
Kevin and Liz are back from their winter stay in Florida.
Travel
Hi Dubai
Obie and Marilyn spent a long weekend in Dubai on the Persian Gulf, checking out the people, sand and skyscrapers. They soared to the top of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, and rode a camel in the desert. Marilyn said wryly, "I don't think we are in Kansas, Obie."
in Abu Dhabi
Dan and Nancy returned from a tour through Croatia. Nancy described it thusly: "Our trip started in Montenegro and then we traveled by land to Dubrovnik to board our 22 passenger 'yacht.' The highlight was the ancient walled city of Dubrovnik but all of the places we toured were enchanting. The palace of Diocletian in Split was built in 33 AD."
Celebrations
Colleen celebrated her birthday in Seattle. From the top of the Space Needle, she proclaimed, "I want to thank my sisters, especially Karyn, for making my 50th birthday one to remember."
Evelyn’s son, Geoffrey, and his fiancé, Lauren, are just days away from tying the knot. Evelyn recently attended the wedding shower for Lauren. Both she and Tim will be at the wedding in Pittsburgh on May 28th.
Media

Gerry highly recommends a new movie entitled The Promise. The film is set during the last days of the Ottoman Empire. From imbd.com: ”[it] follows a love triangle between Michael, a brilliant medical student, the beautiful and sophisticated Ana, and Chris, a renowned American journalist based in Paris.”
Other News

Several RKIDs attend the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Johns Hopkins University near Shady Grove Hospital, a place of learning created in 1986 as a place to “enhance the leisure time of semi-retired and retired individuals.” Kathryn, Nancy, Judy, Mary Ann, and Bob currently participate in the programs. The organization publishes a Journal twice a year and the current Spring/Summer 2017 issue features, as its lead article, a memoir written by Judy. The essay, Portrait of a Superhero, describes her relationship with her grandfather. Congratulations to Judy for this accomplishment. Read the heart-warming tale here (Adobe Acrobat document).
