Brunch Bunch

A lively group gathered at the Woodside Deli for our September breakfast.  Conversation, coffee and tea flowed. Those in attendance were:  Kate, Dan, Tom, Sonja, Maura, Madelyn, Bill, Sharon P, Marilyn O, Michelle.  Just as we were leaving, a man in a kilt walked by. No one asked, “Is it true?” BUT Sonja quickly whisked out our new brochure and encouraged him to come dancing with us. We like the Scottish.

We strutted! We pranced! We marched! AND we danced in the Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade on Monday, September 5th. Under the excellent leadership of Emmett, the RKIDs once again made a fine showing at this annual event. The new banner made its debut “performance,” thanks to Bill and his group of advisors. High fives all around. The paraders were: Sonja, Tom, Sharon C, Chris N, Maureen, Chuck, Evelyn, Bill, Madelyn, Larisa, Emmett, Evan, Sandy, Marieke, and Marilyn O.

Beating the Heat
After the parade, the paraders and other members of the RKIDs (Pat G, Bob, Alison, Emma, Jerry, Colleen, Bobbie, David M, Kathy O, Kate, Dan O’C, Obie, Sharon P, Ann Marie, Jean, Joe, and Michelle) plus some significant others (Tim, Willem) gathered at the O’Brien’s for Italian sausages, hot dogs, and an array of yummy side dishes and desserts. It was great to reconnect with each other after a long, hot summer.

The first class of our 26th year brought out 36 eager dancers. Marilyn M went through the Kerry Set in the Beginner Class. She reviewed the Four-Hand Reel and introduced the Metal Bridge Lancers Set in the Advanced Class. It was so great to see everyone. Lots of smiles! Afterwards, Chuck, Evan, Marilyn O, Emmett, and Obie hashed out the world’s problems at the Dogfish Ale House.

 Travel

Kate spent a few days visiting Marilyn O at the beach house in Bethany. She helped with preparations for the REELaxing weekend. Marilyn shouted from the rooftop, “Thank you, Kate!”

The RKIDs are on the move…Emmett will be introducing his grandsons to the green fields of Ireland in October… Maura and her husband are traveling to New York this week to check in on his mother…Larisa and some family members are off to Greece for a second visit to this magical land…Pat G is traveling to Montana…Obie and Marilyn leave for northern Europe in a couple weeks. Happy Trails to all.

 About Town

Madelyn and Bill had a bit of a reunion with her brother, his wife and one of their sons.  The main event:  watching nephew Dan and his band, PigPen Theatre Co., perform as the featured act at Rams Head Live in Annapolis. Prior to that, they toured the Naval Academy. The following day they went to the National Zoo. The brilliantly colored, poisonous frogs in the “Amazonia” exhibit, a sea lion sommersaulting at the toss of a child’s flip-flop and the rolly-polly pandas were particularly impressive. Bill said, “If you haven’t been to the zoo recently, you really should go.” Hmmm, sounds like a non-dancing activity!

Miss Kelly

The school bells are ringing again and this year they are welcoming Colleen to MCPS. After almost 25 years in the Catholic School System, she is switching to Goshen Elem. School — 8 minutes from her home. She is very excited and looks forward to returning to dance class this year now that her commute is shortened.

For years, Jerry has been volunteering at the Emergency Room Main Desk at Montgomery General Hospital. You may have noticed that he left the party a little early on Labor Day. He was off to his volunteer position. Thank you for that service, Jerry.

In case you haven’t heard, Evan will be participating in the Dewey Beach Triathlon on September 17th. This includes swimming in the ocean, biking, and running. Some of the people participating in the REELaxing weekend at the beach hope to get a view of him as he whizzes by.

 Convalescing

convalescing

Kevin loves to go bass fishing and he has spread the enthusiasm to his grandsons. Last week while enjoying an outing in Seneca Creek State Park with the boys, Kevin had quite a mishap and according to Liz, “He slipped and fell into the water and tore his quadriceps tendon in his knee. That’s the tendon that makes your knee go up and down. He cannot move his leg….The doctor says it will be a long recovery 9-12 months.” He had surgery on Thursday and is now home and mending. He’s lucky to have Liz as his nurse. All best wishes go out to Kevin as he recovers.

The Wristler
Obie was sporting a bandaged right wrist at the Labor Day festivities. He’s been diagnosed with tendonitis and needs to keep his arm still and raised above his heart for a few days. He’s hoping the throbbing stops soon.
