RKIDs Events

The January Brunch at the Woodside Deli brought out some hardy folks. Despite the snowy weather and reports of slippery roads, Tom, Sonja, Bill, Madelyn, Michelle, Connie, MaryAnn, and Roger gathered for lively conversation at the Germantown eatery. Join the group on February 4 at 10 am. No reservation necessary.

Have you ever been to a women’s basketball game? There are a few members of the RKIDs who rarely miss a game at Xfinity Center at the University of Maryland. Obie, Marilyn O, Michelle, and Mary B (a new member of the RKIDs) have been season ticket holders for years and are members of the booster club, The Rebounders. Other RKIDs who occasionally attend games are Judy, Dan O’C, and Kate. The Maryland Women offer a fast-paced style of play and, as the 3rd ranked team in the country, they have their sights on the Final Four. On February 26th, the RKIDs will be going to a game. See Marilyn O for details or go to the website’s Events Calendar.
Irish Activities

What a way to ring in the New Year! Jean, Joe, Michelle, Connie, Toni, David, Tom, and Sonja celebrated January 1, 2017 at the GWCC Ceili. Tom reported that the Ballyvourney Jig was going at full speed AND he lived to tell about it!
Every month the Emerald Isle Club's Ceili group in Baltimore highlights a special Irish dancing group in the area. In January it was Tir Na nOg, which included our very own Emmett.
About Town

Bill and Madelyn spent New Year’s Eve at the Ronald Reagan Building taking in the “Capitol Steps,” a comedy group that puts the “mock in democracy.” The show had a lot of well-written and well-delivered comedic satire.
Celebrations

Evelyn celebrated her ?th birthday with Marie watching “Mary Poppins” at the Olney Theatre Center. Evelyn was flying high afterward! She loved the show.
Travel
Sharon and Chris are still in Hawaii soaking up the sun as they visit their son. On the “Big Island” (Hawaii) they visited the Mauna Kea volcano, Volcanoes National Park, a black sand beach, and the most southern point of the United States (apologies to Key West). They also spent time at the Parker Ranch, one of the nation’s largest cattle ranches with 250,000 acres. It was founded in 1847 by John Palmer Parker and, in recent times, has been opened to the public. On the island of Oahu they took some early morning hikes and enjoyed the lovely sunrises. Overall, a beautiful two weeks in a gorgeous place.
Media

Gerry highly recommends the movie “Hidden Figures,” a film that “recounts the story of three African-American women who worked in professional positions at NASA and helped the US advance during the Space Race.” (Wikipedia)
