Five sets of lively Irish dancers gathered at the RKIDs’ class on Tuesday, Jan. 24 5. The Six-Hand Reel got people a-jumpin’, followed by a review of the Carrowbeg Set. During the announcements, Evelyn reminded people that 3 spaces are still available for the Love Fest on Feb. 18. We will be celebrating our “love” for the Ring of Kerry Irish Dancers at a dinner prepared by the cookbook committee. See the details on our Events calendar. Payment of $25 is due on Jan. 31.
A hardy group of Irish dancers gathered after class at the Dogfish Head Alehouse on Tuesday, Jan 24: Roger, Michelle, Jean, Joe, Emmett, Marilyn O, Obie, and Chuck. It’s a tradition! All are invited. Join us for some rousing conversation.

Sing Street did not receive an Academy Award nomination, but it did get a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture-Musical or Comedy. There are many movie critics who believe it deserved much more recognition for its brilliant musical compositions. The thirteen RKIDs who watched the movie on Saturday night (Madelyn, Bill, Marilyn O, Michelle, Judy, Sonja, Tom, MaryAnn, Pat G, Mary, Kate, Dan O’C, and Kathryn), seemed to agree. People enjoyed the 1980s music, the talent of Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (Conor, who starts a "futurist" band) and Lucy Boynton (Raphina, Conor's love interest and his muse), and the insight into Irish culture at the time. The discussion afterwards was lively and thoughtful. The movie contained many themes often seen in Irish films: family life, the Church, alcoholism, unemployment, emigration, and, of course, music (although in this case, not traditional). It was a fun and engaging evening.

 Irish Activities

Dance and Sing Cruise
Joanie Madden of Cherish the Ladies offers a “Folk ‘n Irish Cruise,” recently going at a rate of twice a year. The next one is to the Caribbean. Some of our lucky members will be on board Feb. 4 – 11: Bill, Madelyn, Marilyn M, Michelle, Larisa, David and Toni. They are looking forward to hearing great music and broadening their knowledge at the music and dance workshops. Bon Voyage!

 About Town

Caffeinated Conversation
Existential Eating
The little railroad stop known as Brunswick, Maryland, located just off Rt. 340, is home to a century-old restored church that now serves as a restaurant, Beans in the Belfry. They offer the finest coffees and teas, delicious fresh baked goods, and an inviting menu of sandwiches, soups, salads, and snacks. Seating is at various shaped wooden tables or comfy sofas. Kathryn and Marilyn O recently had lunch at one of the tables. The sunshine was pouring in through the ancient stained-glass windows providing just the right light for a lovely meal. Highly recommended! And David and Toni, who live nearby, enjoy this landmark too. They especially like the music sessions held from time to time.

No Friction Here

One of Marilyn O’s favorite singing groups is Friction Farm from Greenville, South Carolina. They play in various venues throughout the United States and especially Florida, which is where she first saw them. When they happened to be in the Washington area some time ago, Marilyn and Obie invited them to do a house concert. EVERYONE loved the husband and wife duo. Aidan and Christine write their own folk-like music to highlight her pure, delightful voice. They recently performed at the library near Kevin and Liz’s Florida residence so the two Irish dancers took Marilyn’s advice and went to see them. Liz reported that "it was a really nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Great concert; so relaxing.”
